Cognac, brandy or brande is the product of wine distillation, generally containing about 40-60% alcoholic strength by volume. The name in Portuguese is derived from the French word cognac, a type of cognac with a geographical indication of the homonymous region of France.
In addition to wine, this distilled beverage can be made with fermented fruit juice (in the case of grapes normally only wine species are used). It is usually tasted after meals.
